Job Purpose
The AFJ Law Program Manager will be instrumental in transforming AFJ Law into a comprehensive program that strengthens legal capacity across the movement. This position is ideal for someone who is excited about building a program from the ground up and shaping its future direction.The AFJ Law Program Manager will oversee operational systems, cultivate relationships with internal and external partners, and ensure alignment across AFJ teams. The Program Manager will lead coordination efforts, oversee program expansion, and provide research and analysis to inform strategy and advocacy. This position can be based in AFJ’s Washington, DC office or work remotely, with occasional travel for events and meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Systems Integration and Operations Management: Oversee AFJ Law operational systems and coordinate with AFJ-wide systems to ensure seamless functionality and data integrity
- Data and Client Management: Collaborate with AFJ Law Program Director and operations team to establish secure infrastructure – including databases, firewalls, standard operating procedures, and compliance protocols - for case management, client intake and controlled information flow across AFJ programs
- Program Expansion: Collaborate with AFJ leadership to scale the AFJ Law pilot into a comprehensive program, including planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Relationship Management: Cultivate strong partnerships with internal teams and external stakeholders to amplify program impact
- Research and Analysis: Conduct legal research into AFJ Law matters, providing insights and recommendations to inform program strategies and advocacy efforts
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Coordinate with Communications, Development, Membership and Outreach, and Operations teams to align AFJ Law program activities with organizational priorities
- Support AFJ’s commitment to advance equity in all aspects of the organization, and help create an organizational culture that is inclusive, respectful, and equitable
- Monitor trends in progressive and nonprofit advocacy spaces relevant to AFJ Law and its impact areas, identifying opportunities for AFJ Law to increase its presence and reach of services
- Assist in preparation of program reports such as board updates, funder reports, and other stakeholder communications
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in program management
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; experience in legal operations a plus
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills
- Nonprofit and/or public interest organization experience a plus
- A team player with excellent interpersonal skills; brings a great attitude, patience, and a sense of humor to the workplace
- Strong collaborator and able to adapt quickly to changing situations
- Proactive initiative to build technical skills and take on additional areas of responsibility with minimal oversight
- Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time
- Demonstrates creativity, initiative, and judgement to manage own workload and support the AFJ Law team
- Exceptional computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, SharePoint, etc.); experience with case management systems a plus
- Willingness to learn/implement new software/tech platforms quickly

Compensation and Benefits
This is an exempt union position covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, CWA Local 32035, which includes salary minimums based on job position category. This position is in Group 4 and has a salary minimum of $77,500. The starting salary range for this position is $77,500-$85,925.We offer a comprehensive and generous benefits program, including:

Save for retirement with our 401K plan with a 5% employer contribution. Other insurances include life and disability.
Time Off
- Year 1 (0-12 months): Eleven (11) days of vacation each year (3.66 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 17 days
- Year 2-4: Sixteen (16) days of vacation each year (5.33 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 24 days
- Year 4+: Twenty-One (21 days) of vacation each year (7.0 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 32 days
Eligible employees may take up to sixteen (16) total weeks of leave in connection with the birth of the employee’s child, placement of a child with the employee for adoption, or gaining of a foster child. AFJ and AFJ Action will provide eligible employees with twelve (12) weeks of fully paid parental leave for purposes of bonding with a new baby following a birth or placement of a child for adoption or gaining of a foster child.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so. On occasions, travel by car, train, and/or airplane. Ability to work long hours when needed (though rare). All employees are required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions. Work Environment
This is a full-time position that can be fully remote from anywhere in the contiguous United States. Some occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Ability to travel to events such as staff retreats, or other work meetings is required.
Direct Reports
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
